(h)our 8&9 Residency

Helen Cuinn , Glasgow-based performance artist

Lucy Irvine, Melbourne-based sculptor

Caroline Pugh, Belfast-based musician

(h)our 8&9 is a collective which fosters collaboration across art forms. Three Scottish artists with similar attitudes to creativity bring together their diverse practices in performance, visual art and music.  After a year of remote communication, the residency allowed Caroline, Helen and Lucy to share the same workspace and time zone.

In March 2009, an initial response to the site was sent from Belfast in the form of two packages. A response to the packages generated a chain reaction of written and video-based work that set the direction of the residency. Oscillating between close communication and creative independence, we combined video, performance and installation.  A common language was most apparent when our own knowledge and practices were most challenged. (h)our 8&9 performed on Sunday 17th May 6pm in Flat 4

Most Wednesdaysis a framework for improvisation.  When filmed from one angle, the space between a makeshift backdrop and frame becomes a stage.  Building on the remains of (h)our 8&9’s work, performance platforms were created throughout the site. Like an extension of a traditional music session, MW encourages guests to join in.  Any subject or genre can be contributed, including performance, writing, cooking, physics and history. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_zswsHgaVU&feature=channel

One Candle: a solo performance by Caroline Pugh on Sunday 24th May 6pm in Flat 4

Caroline Pugh approached Flat 4 with songs both traditional and new.  Thank you to all who came and joined in with the chorus.

Audio travels easily between the private space of the residence to the public area outside. This was explored in four variations on the local soundscape set in four different rooms. Structured improvisation, extended vocal technique, found sound and songwriting were used to evoke alarming interruptions and the intimacy of overheard conversation. Improvisation, carried verses and video blogging were the precursor to this residency.  This work drew on and intersected with Most Wednesdays and the work of Helen Cuinn and Lucy Irvine through the (h)our8+9 collective.
